whos coming to Black Eagle

  • $2,000 is not that much for 4 nights of extended bar hours. After all, the PRIDE committee does have to make money somehow. I think this is actually reasonable. However, the other issues: removing patrons from the patio, increased liquor inspections, etc. are valid concerns. However, this doesn't address why they don't stay open on New Years Eve the extra hour. There's only a handful of people out on the patio in the wintertime anyway, so not a big deal to close it at 2am. I also suspect there are less liquor inspectors on New Years Eve since everyone wants the night off. As well, all Ontario bars can stay open later so not like PRIDE when they can find all sorts of overcrowding, etc. issues because just a handful of bars in one specific neighbourhood are affected. Still, I think they're somewhat of party poopers for not getting on the bandwagon like most other bars and restaurants along the street. HAPPY PRIDE everyone!

  • 43asshole, your right, that's a lot of money to shell out for the extra hour or so for any business. I guess they have to look at the return of customers or knowledge of patrons in the first place that they are open late for the following nights to help make up for it. With Woody's being so close, I may go there after Dtguy4nsafun services my boots and I toss him 2 shiny dimes as a tip. I'm looking forward to seeing all my buddies in Toronto for pride, that's what I love about Pride is the get together's.

  • It's costly for bars to be open late for pride after 2am $2,000.00 this money is given to the pride committee but then you get the hassel from liqour inspectors , OPP because everyone is drunk after 2am and more fines are given out to bars. That is why only a few bars are open after 2am (Woody's,Crews). It's hard for smaller bars to open after 2am when they don't get the money back I mean the $2,000.00 plus.

I hope everyone enjoy pride 2009

    Cheers

  • It would be great if the Black Eagle was also open late like the rest for pride. But I guess we can always leave prior to 2pm like testwillie said and go to another bar. With pride, it's alway a good opportunity to see old friends that don't go to the Black Eagle and only visit more of the dance bars. That being said, after Dtguy4nsafun services me and licks my boots in the back room the way he's told, I'll leave him a 20 cents as a tip and move on to another bar around 2pm. Let's hope the weather has warmed up by pride, it's just been a really cool spring. It would be great to go over to the island beach to tan while we are in Toronto. Please, if we see each other in Toronto, say hi, I may even buy you a beer (10 beers per visit per night only)

  • I wouldn't worry about impact of this posting on visitors to Toronto. I.m going to be there June 26-28th and will be heading to Black Eagle just because of the postings...want to see what it's really like.
I'll also have enough money in my pocket to pay for all my drinks, and perhaps offer one or two should I make any new friends.
Thanks for a most entertaining posting. Looking forward to enjoying the big city.

  • I agree that we've heard enough nonsense about the missing 20 cents. To an outsider it seems like we must not have any real issues to discuss. Well how about this. During PRIDE most bars along Church Street stay open until 4am. Of course they have to signal their interest in so doing with the PRIDE committee first. The Black Eagle never applies. Why not? As the only gay leather bar in the gaybourhood I think they are being smug in their decision (actually the only bar that never applies) not to gladly go for extended hours and no doubt extra revenue and tips for owners and staff. I suspect if there was another leather bar in competition with the Black Eagle it would be a different story. Same thing on New Years Eve. Actually then you don't even need to apply. Liquor laws automatically allow for 3am last call. Again, the Eagle closes at 2am. So for out of towners expecting an exciting night at the Black Eagle I would leave well in advance of 2am so you can get in somewhere else. Everyplace is packed. The Eagle needs to show more interest in the gay community and prove to us that they can party hardy with the rest of the bars.

  • looking4oldr, not sure if your on drugs or not, but I don't know about Barrie and guys that lost there bags?? your in your own little world I guess. looking4oldr if you work at the bar that is fine, but be up front about it.
If we all treat people like your bartender did to Yelad, it's doesn't say much about the human race. When we come to Toronto for pride, our group will be passing around 100 little envelopes with $0.20 in them, total cost $20 to help 100 people. So you cheap pricks can pass it onto the next guy if they need it, but most likely you'll just take it home and keep it for your selves.

Hey mister can you lead a hand??, twenty cent is all I need. No way man, I'm from Toronto. Sad, but read that on this board posted by Yelad

Just think, if you got in a taxis and when across town to find you were 20 cents short and the end when paying. What would you think if the taxis wouldn't let you out and then drives you back to where you got in and kicks you out and calls you a free loader??.

listen here you twit, I wouldn't step foot in Winnipeg if it's over run by righteous, know-it-all, whinny queens like yourself!

    you're a piece of work!

you're so whinny, I pity your current/past/future partners as applicable. Do you ever shut up? With all that drama, you should be on broadway!

I bet you're the type of person that complains about everything. I bet you wrote a letter of complaint to every bank, cable, phone, grocery store, furniture store, restaurant, government agency you ever dealt with.

I could just imagine the conversation around your dinner table! If I was your partner, i'd need electric shock therapy to numb me.

  • Thanks Dtguy4NSfun for solidifying Toronto's position on visitors to stay home for Pride, that outsiders aren't welcome to your city. When we called the bed&breakfast to book our room, they said business was not very good overall this year and is hurting all businesses. I guess Toronto and including the gay businesses are not using you to help bring people for pride to ensure revenues are up in a slow economy are they?
What you should have said, it's just a few that acted mean that way and overall guys in Toronto have big hearts. But instead you just attack me and to any outsider that sure makes it sound like your all in the same boat.

Also as for your last comment in your posting, the only way you'll have with me is what I tell you to do when I want you to do it. Only after you buy me a beer and prove your not a cheap prick like some of the guys that treated or acted mean to the guy that was twenty cents short.

  • When I order a beer, I want a beer, I could care less if I get it with a smile, a wink of an eye etc., I do like hearing the words 'thank you' no matter where I shop.

I usually tip a buck a beer, I rarely hear 'thank you' from the bartenders, except for the asian bartender, he's always says thank you and he PLAYS THE BEST MUSIC!

We shouldn't be debating whether or not 50 cent or $2 tips are in order, tip what you feel. Not tipping is not illegal. You just look like a chump if you don't tip or if you cheap out.

We should be discussing how to get rid of the freeloaders that walk off the street into the bar without dropping a dime! They should charge admission to the back room or at give a free entry pass to those that buy drinks.

  • Yelad, Bartenders are there to make money, not to pay for your shortcummings... If you are 20cents short for a beer.. Maybe you should start drinking at home and not in social settings. The bar is not strictly for your amusement and if you don't have enough money for a beer STAY HOME!!!!!

  • who's the old guy around 75 - 80, shuffles around the dark room, wears a blue jaquard acrylic sweater? He's very agressive, doesn't take no for an answer. One doesn't want to be rude with him, but any suggestions on how to deal with him? I often wonder if he's some veteran, or someone's granddad - i can't be rude

  • looking4older, so you calling someone you don't know a freeloader because he had 20cents less due to price changes from day to night rates. Most people still believe you can buy a beer for $5 in a stand-up type bar, and he bought one the last time that cost $4.50 total, why wouldn't he think his $5 wouldn't cover it the next time before/after he ordered it??.
I'm sure you must have bought things in the past but the next time the price went up without you known it when you got to the cash, would you be called a free loader??.
I think the main point here, is serving staff's poor attitude in serving customers over all. But it does happen a lot at other businesses, were the staff doesn't greet you when you go to the cash or thank you for your purchase, but when you work for tips, most staff will think ahead to the next purchase the guy makes and will gain back more on the next tip.
Just think for a sec, I give between $0.50 to $1.00 tip each time I buy a beer and most others do also at the Eagle, so for less than half of the lowest tip that many give, the bartender just said NO to this guy after serving him the beer and put the open beer back in the cooler to sell it to the next customer. Just the fact the beer was open and he was going to sell it later on makes you question his actions. I wouldn't want to come in a half hour later and be served that beer.

Wait staff rely on tips to help with their income and many just expect a tip without even communicating with the customer at all. Like I said before, to order a beer and there's no communication at all like, ( hi, $4.50 please or thanks/thank you) doesn't make you want to buy another one later.
Don't make excuses for wait staff that use bad judgment or poor attitude while working with a tip base system .
Being a bartender is more than know what product they are selling or how to serve it to a customer. They are in a customer relation business for the business. Just the fact that this came up on a chat site, goes back to the bartenders action for the sake of 20 cents. Now, will they lose any business due to this bad attitude/action? the answer is no, but they will not gain any either. Customers tend to go where staff is friendly and reasonable and they will recommend the place to one or more. But where a customer is treated badly, they will tell 10 and that we all know as a fact. Of course since it's posted on a site like this, 10 is more like a few hundred knowing of a bad attitude.

  • The Eagle is a lot more sensative to freeloaders than the average bar in Toronto. People forget that it's a business, that requires paying customers to operate and pay the bills. There's lots of guys that go there just to cruise, use the back room and don't buy anything. I've seen it many times and it's obviously a sore spot for the bartenders there. They're not your buddies that should cut you a break, they're running a business.

Yelad showed up at a bar on a Saturday night with less than enough money to purchase one beer. Like most freeloaders there, instead of taking out some money from the bank machine or whatever he purchased nothing and made a bee line for the back room. I don't think it's a harsh concept that if you plan to hang out in a bar, you need to buy a drink. If you don't have enough cash on hand to buy one dirink it would probably be a good idea to find something else to do.

He serves paying customers! Name me a bar that bartenders give away free beer to freeloaders like you! Eagle is not the welfare department! No one should be able to short change a business. To be honest your comment is the most pathetic thing i have read on cruise in two years.

Maybe be your are the Susan Boyel of Britain has talent. You are not in first place!

  • Yelad, I hear you about ""crafted customer service skills, where cold"". I don't know the guy your talking about. But I go to the Black Eagle a lot, was there again Wednesday night around 7pm and the bartender, bear type guy with the beard served me as he did many times in the past. Basically with just a look, I state a blue light. He gives me the beer and takes the money. I always tip, but just hate giving my $0.50 tip, because the guy has never said thank you yet or anything else, he could be a mute?. I'm not the only one he does this to either as I normally drink it by the wall ledge. One may expect this in a busy bar, but when I go it's normally between 7-9pm before going to dinner and there's normally only a handful of guys in the bar.

Maybe they need to be trained at the Black Eagle in Montreal or at the Le Stud bar first before working in Toronto, there, they know how to communicate with customers and I don't even speak French. They always smile and say thanks and most times ask, how's it going. Common bartender training, it's called working up your tips and selling more product.

  • Have stopped at the Eagle on several occasions over the past ten years, always feel comfortable and at ease. Stopped in on Saturday night about 12:30 a.m., place was busy. Stopped at the downstairs bar, ordered a beer, was told it was $5.50, new I had the five and some change. However was $0.20 short. Asian bartender again states it's $5.50, wouldn't even consider taking the $5.30. I'm in total agreement that the price is the price. However he has waited on me many times before and has always been tipped generously. I wasn't planning a night out, just a stop at a familiar watering hole for a quick drink on a whim as I passed by. His attitude and finally crafted customer service skills, where cold, callous, and directed to degrade me. As he took the beer back to the cooler, a smirk on his face. Frankly I rarely go on a weekend, usually thru the week and the price is $4.50, a $5.00 covers that with the tip. I guess that is where my mind was at. But to be treated as such made me slightly embarrassed, as other customers looked on.I got over it quickly and joined the many other patrons in the darkroom, many of them without drinks, or even the intention to buy a drink. Had lots of fun, and went home with my $5.30 in my pocket. Maybe the Asian bartender should spent some time in the darkroom, it may help his service skills and put a smile on his face. Happy Pride!

  • If you like bears, don't forget to come out to the bears nights with the Bears of Toronto and Spearhead, the 3rd Friday of each month. The next one is on the 17th.
