Rua Frei Caneca
This is a unique case in Rio: a straight dance club for mature people (gafieira, typical Brazilian dance) opens to gay people at Carnival time.
On a corner at downtown Rio, near the main Carnival street parade (Desfile das Escolas de Samba), an upstairs ballroom with a view over the street.
Buy your ticket at the door in the right end of building. Get up to the ballroom and feel the wood floor move under jumping people. Dance, cruise, kiss and hug. Get up again to the upper deck and enjoy a hot, crowded, not-so-dark room. When you finish or feel exhausted, get down to the ballroom and from there to the street by an exit-only stair. It is important because at exit door you will get a plastic bracelet that allows you to get in again by the entrance stair. Which is great, because of terminal heat inside and lower drink prices outside. This arrangement results in a crowd in front of the place, very useful to cruise and talk. But the place is unique at its relatively lighted dark-room: you can clearly see everything that matters.
Crowd: Men from everywhere in the world to meet ordinary Brazilian men.
