POLICE / Charges laid in connection with robberies targeting gay men

story by Rory MacDonald / Capital Xtra! Jan 17 2003

Police have charged a 37-year-old Ottawa man in connection with a series of robberies that targeted gay men who use the telephone dating service Cruiseline.

Lawrence Pigeon faces 38 criminal charges including 12 counts of robbery, 10 counts of being unlawfully in a dwelling house, four of forcible entry, three of uttering threats, two each of causing bodily harm, forcible confinement and mischief and one each of extortion, possession of a dangerous weapon and break and enter. The charges are in relation to 10 separate incidents dating back to May of last year.

As reported in Capital Xtra (Issue 111, Oct 25) the accused in each case is said to have met his victims through Cruiseline. He would meet the victim at his home and demand money. If the victim refused, he was verbally threatened, and, in some cases, physically assaulted.

Harlon Davey, the marketing manager of Cruiseline, says hes relieved to hear of the arrest.

Im glad that they caught someone, and people can feel a bit easier about using Cruiseline. But callers should continue to use common sense when they use the system.

Davey says he wasnt involved with the police investigation, but was more concerned about the media sensationalizing the case.

Pigeon was in custody pending a court appearance on Jan 14, after Capital Xtras press deadline.

Pigeon is no stranger to the police. He was released on day parole in February of last year after serving 15 months of a two-year prison sentence for beating and robbing a man he met through his activities as a male prostitute. One of the conditions of his parole was residing at a treatment facility in Ottawa, but eight days after being released, he disappeared.

  • Cruiseline can sometimes be frustrating. But every now and then you can find a nice guy to hang out or/and have fun with. So don't give up, but don't get addicted to it either.

  • Cruiseline is the gay community at it's worst. A bunch of twisted pathological liars wasting their worthless time and trying to do the same to others.
