Is This Your Business?

Built for the 2002 Commonwealth Games, the Manchester Aquatics Centre is a great modern leisure facility - prices are only 1.80 pound for a student swim and about an extra 1 pound on top for the adult swim. It is a joint venture between the council and the two Manchester Universities (as well as Salford Uni) and it's location is literally on Oxford Road, between MMU and Uni of Manchester. As a result it is always busy and there are usually plenty of hot students around the place, although you do also get families and other patrons as it is a public baths.

Neighbourhood: Oxford Road

Located on Oxford Road before the intersection with Booth Street. Any buses heading down the Oxford Road/Wilmslow Road towards Rusholme, Fallowfield, Didsbury etc (41, 42, 43, 142, 143, 147, 111, etc) stop outside
  • Directions:Located on Oxford Road before the intersection with Booth Street. Any buses heading down the Oxford Road/Wilmslow Road towards Rusholme, Fallowfield, Didsbury etc (41, 42, 43, 142, 143, 147, 111, etc) stop outside
  • except the 85/86 services
  • and there is a car park to the side of the building, accessed from York Street. The building is opposite MMU's Geoffrey Manton building as well as the Royal National College of Music.
  • Hours:Open Mon - Fri 0630hrs - 2200hrs, Sat 0700hrs - 1800hrs and Sunday 0700hrs - 2200hrs. Centre busy most times of day - avoid periods from 1530hrs - 1700hrs midweek as can be lots of families, as well as main hours over weekend - evenings from 1800hrs are quieter - the City of Manchester Swim Team train each night between 1600hrs and 2000hrs but the pool is sectioned off into two halves so doesnt cause a problem. Oh and in May and October, the Great British Bear Bash and Pre-Hibearnation events tend to book the private pool downstairs for big gay bears and blokes at around 5 pounds - one to look out for!
  • Cruising Info/ Tips:Obviously with it being a public baths, there is CCTV covering most areas of the pool so care needs to be exercised. There are a number of attendants who check the walked areas of changing, but the toilets are not often checked - designed to be quite small so noise needs to be kept down but at top of changing area are larger family cubicles that I have personally seen at least two people get into comfortably - and three would just be, well, cosy! =) Obv use discretion as gets busy with younger kids at certain times but early morning - mid afternoon is mostly adults and uni students... There is also a full gym which you have to pay extra to use - but I have not used this personally so couldn't comment on the facilities.
  • Nudity / Policy:Changing booths where designed for two or more can be shared, showers are unfortunately open and in full view of pool and attendants but toilets are more private. No nudity of course.
  • Wheelchair Accessible:No / The centre is fully accessible to the handicapped and those with physical or mobility impairment, including wheelchair users.
  • Warnings:As mentioned above, due to the nature as a public space, care MUST be exercised and discretion used when cruising. The centre is patrolled by the centre staff who wear name badges or plainly identifiable yellow lifeguard polo shirts with red shorts.
