Who's Coming
A very eclectic band of on a Sunday there is wild drumming as the sun sets into the ocean.
Take State Route 31 that begins at the junction of SR-310 and SR-311 in Kihei, which is a town on the western coast of Maui. Head south on SR-31 (Piilani Highway) about 8 miles, then turn right onto Waikea Iki Drive. Proceed about 0.6 mile, where the road will end at a Tintersection with the coastal road. Turn left (south) at the coastal road, which is Wailea Alanui Drive but soon changes names to Makena Alanui. Heading south, continue several miles. You will pass several posh hotels. Keep an eye out for the Maui Prince Hotel (a 5-story white structure), which is the last of the large hotels. Continue a mile or so south of the Maui Prince. You will see a prominent cinder cone, which is a hill formation that juts into the ocean. The beach behind the cinder cone is your destination. When you pass the cinder cone, look for a short road to a paved parking lot on the right. (There is an additional lot down the road if this one is full). Park and walk to the beach. At this point, you'll be on Makena Beach (a.k.a. Big Beach), where swimsuits are required. Walk north (to the right when facing the water) until you reach the lava rock outcropping at the end of the beach. Climb over the lava rocks. On the other side, you'll arrive at Little Beach, which is the nude beach. Continue north to the far end of the beach, which is where gay men tend to gather.
