  • about the post i made about the cameras being in the park. from what i can see. there are no cameras around the parking lot of the park. only around the building the pool and the skate park. so as long as you keep it clean when your around thoes areas i'm sure nobody will get bothered.

  • Criminals-to-be beware there will be surveillance cameras monitoring public high-crime areas in the city.

The citys enforcement services department is beginning the installation of two cameras in the northwest corner downtown and one camera near Muskoseepi Parks pavilion.

Weve identified an area in the downtown that has a significant number of criminal issues through statistics, ... so thats going to be our first focus, said Garry Roth, enforcement services manager.

There are also some vandalism and crime issues that were identified in Muskoseepi Park area, so there will also be a camera mounted in that particular area.

The cameras will be used as an investigation tool. If something happens in the area, officers can go back and check the video cameras. Occasionally, there will be someone monitoring the camera live, but Roth said the department doesnt have sufficient resources for someone to be on duty all the time.

The surveillance cameras must only be focused on public spaces, not private, said Roth.

There is also going to be signage going up, so that people that are driving or walking the streets will be able to see that there is signage.

For privacy reasons, if they have any concerns, they can contact our office.

The project will initially be technologically limited because it is designed to be wireless.

The city is moving forward with wireless broadband access, estimated at $6 million, which is expected to improve city services. Funding for the project is being sought through the Building Canada Fund.

These cameras are going to be part of that initiative, but the initial part of it, we are setting wireless access points so the cameras can be places in specific portions of the city and still be connected, said Roth.
