this place was fun! I'm glad I went... next time i'm in the bay area i'm going back. great variety of hot guys. staff was very friendly and nice.

people there were really cool. lots of areas to play too.

Outside of the bear-specific Saturdays, how friendly is the crowd at steamworks for a chubby bear cub? Is there any bear action here normally? Is there attitude? Would love to go if it's cub-friendly.

I have been hitting this place about once a week , for the last two months. I use it as my first nite motel when i come in town for work.
I can't stay there every nite , i need my sleep. LOL. This has happened to me at the Steamworks and at the Watergarden. So it' sort of funny. I get into town, have a few drinks down the street . Smoke a joint outside , Before i come in. , i check in . i stop at the vending machine to buy lube and in both cases the lube get stuck and just hangs there or bounces to the side. Now I have not even hit my room yet and im having to deal with management. Now at the Steamworks it bounces up on a lower rack, And the manager does not trust me that i bought the $7.00 and not the $6.00 bottle. He can see a bottle but he cant tell for shure. This guy spends the next 20 min. trying to fiquire out it he should give 7 or 6 back. I tell him just bring it to my room. He want me to waite. In the mean time he is on the phone having a argument on the phone with someone he knows. While he is dealing with me. Im loosing my Buzz quick. So now at the Watergarden, The lube is just hanging there, The guy at the counter just checked me in, He gives me the change for the machine . But when i show him what happened he does not know what to do . He can't open the machine. He cant just give be some lube from behind the counter,. He has to fill out paperwork. I have to sign the paper work. This all takes about twenty min. i just want to shower and play. So always bring your own lube!! ...........................Also as a side note they are checking bags real good. They took every thing out. Im a 50 year old white guy.

EDIT! my last posting on here. The "searching of the bags" is not at Steamworks. But at Watergarden.

For those of you that have recently asked, this place is nowhere as active as it was a few years ago. The poor economy has definitely kept people away. It's much harder to drop $30 for a room now than it was a few years ago. Even though they recently extended the visit time back to 8 hours (vs. 6) the number of people is definitely lower. There used to be a waiting list for the rooms by 5:30 on Sat evenings. Now the waiting list doesn't start until much later on. I hear that Sun mornings/afternoons are still the best.

This place is great. Was in the Bay aArea on business and visited Tuesday night, was busy for a week night. Even a chubby bear like me saw significant action all night.
Will definitely visit again when in town and would highly recommend to anyone interested in a great time.

Do they allow poppers here?

I make the trip here about once a month. im 90 miles away. So i spend the night usually. Bring earplugs if your going to try to spend the night. The music is techno dance? maybe. And there are no ceilings in the rooms. The Amtrak station and a couple bar/resturants are on the next block. I take the train to richmond and then Bart to Berkeley. Bus takes you to the bar. Hit S.W. around 10pm play and sleep and then take the Berkeley train a block away at 6.55 am. Choo Choo!!!

Discreet Masculine guy here, have always wanted to check out steamworks. Have the day off tomorrow and was thinking of going. Would probably go around lunch. Whats the crowd like around then?

The "Lights Out" party almost always seems to be a hit {of the times I've gone~}, draws a pretty large crowd, and is definitely worth the trip over (with a wide assortment of men to indulge in, or just for a nice dip or a steamroom soak). There's usually a line to get in which extends out the door just to get in, standard $14.00 entrance fee, and lasts from 4pm until 10pm on Thursday nights.

The crowd is a good mix or older men intermixed with some of the younger crowd from the UC campus. Lots of businessmen and blue collar guys, a good mix of gay/bi/married & couples - men.
I definitely recommend going; you're guaranteed to have a blast! Hope to see you there sometime...
